Digging out and Winner Announced

First up, thank you everyone here and over at Ravelry who entered the drawing for the first part of my TNNA giveaway. We had over 80 people enter which is so exciting! Especially since the goodies just will keep getting better.

With help from my assistant (shouting stop) over breakfast this morning, we randomly stopped at Ginny's name! Congrats to Ginny! SO excited that you won too. Ginny is an amazing crocheter and I can't wait to see what she cooks up with these tools!

Today I am spending the day digging out from piles of yarn and project; and emails and tweets. Being away for 10 days certainly takes a toll on your studio. Mine is wrecked. Luckily I got through a lot of the house chores; like getting groceries and cleaning. And am down to this mess. I might leave it for a while. I have these grand hopes on re-organizing the studio now that all our stuff is in one place. That's right, we have all our stuff here. No more "summer house" in Cincinnati. While I was traveling the closing for the old house, finally (and painfully) went through. Even though it will take us a few years to pay back the loan we had to take out to close; at least we will not have to have 2 houses to care and worry over. We are now officially Pittsburghers. I know I am looking forward to concentrating on making this house ours after nearly 11 mths of just getting by.

On the task list the next few weeks, is final edits for the encyclopedia, a few last charts and articles for book 3, proposal for book 4 (hey, have to pay off that loan somehow), and 3 magazine projects. Seems light compared to the crazy schedule I have been keeping. Well, enough dwelling, better start tackling that pile.

What I did on my spring break...

WOW! What a whirlwind. I was joking with the ladies at DFW Fiber Fest that I should have flown through Detroit and Durham (instead of Chicago) so I could have said I was touring all the great D cities. Denver, Dallas, .... All week I was constantly saying I was in the wrong huge city.

While in Colorado, I went to Mecca (AKA Interweave Offices). I got to see where all the magic happens behind my books and the magazines. It was great to finally meet so many people in person that we only know each other online. It was really cool. The town of Loveland has an artistic vibe going so I can see how everyone can be so creative. While there, I taped some DVDs for Interweave and Crochet Me. They will be available this summer. It was the first time for me to be alone taping, usually I have someone else I am talking to so I can block out everything else going on. The entire video crew made me feel at home immediately so all those nerves just went away. It also helped that I talked to these cuties the entire time:

Here are my two sets. They pretty much tell exactly what I taught, but I will wait to talk about content until the promos are out. Yes, I said promos. Weird. I am so dyslexic it was QUITE the challenge to say the promo script clearly. I just ended up memorizing it in the end. So much easier.

I really can't wait to tell you more, so crazy that this summer they will be out. That's just a few weeks away!

Crazier that I flew directly from this to teaching in Dallas. Amazingly teaching totally different stuff too. I basically taught 6 different classes in 3 days.

DWF Fiber Fest was fantastic. The crocheters in TX were so excellent that we flew through my classes. I was so happy to be with them and I think they liked me too. Or at least I didn't bore them too much. They then treated us to a yummy dinner on Saturday night, what could be nicer? I, of course, totally forgot to take pictures- oops! Speaking of classes, I will be teaching at the June TNNA show too if you are a yarn store employee and want to come join me Sunday or Monday morning.

I will say that my mind is starting to totally erase last week since I was picked up yesterday at the airport and driven directly to CJ's pediatrician. Of course she is super sick again, so I am in full mom mode making sure she is getting better. Hopefully my brain will come back and I will have more tidbits for you soon!

Day in our life

I have been getting a lot of "how to do you do it" questions and I thought I would share "how we do it". I will say up front that some days I can get lots of work done and some days nothing. In terms of actual work time, I probably get between 3-6 hours to work a day without staying up too too late.

Here's our day, pretty much every day.

We get up (I wake up the same time as CJ, and Mr CBF takes her while I shower and get dressed- all of 10 minutes), we have breakfast and get changed. While food is warming, I check my email from overnight and sometimes tweet about the day. We head up to the office (the office/ playroom is in the attic) around 10 (because it takes us that long to eat, get changed- sometimes twice, unload the dishwasher or some other chore). CJ will play up here anywhere from 30 min to an hour. So I do things that I can with one eye on her. I can do some office tasks or swatch, nothing that I need to concentrate on. She goes down for a nap then I can write back emails or write a pattern or call someone. Morning nap can last from an hour or more. Once she is up I take the afternoon "off". We have lunch, run errands, go to the park, have play dates; all while I am checking email on my phone (basically keeping in touch). We head back to the office in the late afternoon, again for an hour or less I can do things that I can with one eye on her. Sometimes Mr CBF comes home early enough and I can get another hour of concentration time, sometimes not. After dinner, we play downstairs for a bit. I usually can crochet a row or two while we are playing or reading. After bedtime, I will head back to the office and crunch out some more patterns or emails. Then bed for me.

That's it. Everyday. Basically writing when she is napping, crocheting while she is playing. And squeezing in work when I can. Nothing magical at all. I just work all the time.

Rabbit Hole

Well, as I am sure you can tell by now. Relocating cities (from Cincy to Pittsburgh), while still working full time and taking care of CJ and Faye, took up all my time. Moving cities definitely feels like we just fell down a rabbit hole and came out the other side. Nothing much has changed in terms of our schedule, just the view. (as demonstrated by babe who was "helping" mommy block a sweater.)

We spent a week in the new house without furniture. Just air mattresses, camp chairs, a bucket of toys, and a bit of yarn. All was great, except in the craze of packing all my hooks and tools went to storage and we brought christmas ornaments instead. Oops! But it gave me the opportunity to check out the local stores. I found that JoAnns, of all places, has my hooks I use (clover soft touch in 4.5mm). And I just treated myself to some new hooks and tools, calling it a welcome present to myself. Speaking of hooks, 4.5mm is my new fav size, but it stinks b/c not all brands of hooks carry it. It is the perfect size, in my opinion of course, for sportweight when you are a tight crocheter like I am.

We are getting settled in. Boxes are our furniture now. They take up every square inch of the floor to babe and Faye's dismay. The new house actually has a room that will be my studio, which is very exciting to have a room to myself. It is in the attic, which is a very cool feature of a lot of homes in Pittsburgh, but until the weather breaks I will be downstairs in front of the fans. It will be fantastic in the long PA winters though, esp with our pretty awesome view of downtown.

In the middle of the moving craze, I was working on a couple of projects. I finally got smart and asked for help on crocheting the majority of the projects. In my delusion, I thought I could crochet 2 adult winter projects in 2 weeks while packing and moving. Well, that was just silly. I asked help from both Diane and Ginny who are amazingly talented to do the heavy lifting for me. They both did awesome jobs, then I got to crochet the finishing touches. (Mainly b/c I wanted to have some fun too!)

Both are for the same magazine (of course I will tell you which when I can). One is a cabled project in merino wool. One of my favorites. The cabling came out great. I had nothing to do with that. It was all Diane. She is the BEST at cables. I want her to teach me her secrets because her cables beat the pants off of mine. The other project is a dreamy cluster stitch pattern project with my classic wide ribbing. I got about half way through the back when I called "uncle" and asked for Ginny's help. In a week, she crocheted everything but a few inches of the ribbing. She is awesome! So hard to keep crocheting in the exact same gauge right where another left off.

Both came out to be quite stunning, and the editors loved them. Which makes me happy, since I stressed so much over them.

Now that they are out the door, I have been working on the next book. Yup, I have another book or two up my sleeve. This one I am pretty jazzed about. I can't tell you the premise, but I can tell you that it will have a few of my designs and a lot of other great designers. I love the new title of project editor, which is technically my position on the book. I got to decide on the concept; pick out the projects and yarn; then I will be drawing the stitch diagrams, and writing all the fun tips and such in the book. I am so excited it is silly. I just have LOVED the collaboration between the designers. It is so awesome to get to talk crochet and design everyday. I will fill you in as I can, but since it is in the early days that is all I can tell you.

But speaking of books, Baby Blueprint is in my hot little hands right now! The galley looks amazing! Interweave really did a great job. I am reading line by line every number and symbol to double check that it is as correct as it can be before they go to press. I really hope that you guys like it. I think the projects are great, and I can't wait to share them with you.

Well, speaking of editing. I better get at it before babe wakes up from her nap and I get no more time. Deadline for the edits are tomorrow, so I better hop!

Day in the Life of this Stuctural Crochet Engineer

So last time we chatted, it was from my engineering POV, today I have a typical crochet day. On Friday, I had the day off to finish the editing of the galley copy of Blueprint Crochet (yes, I know my boss is truly a wonderful person to give me off to do things like that, as well as only working PT. In the engineering world he is quite the pioneer on being flexible and supportive.)

7:20 am: Faye wakes me up with a kiss on the nose and a nose to my elbow. "Hey mom, get up!"

7:30 am: Feed Faye. Check email. Get PayPal notice that another bidder has paid for some of my eBay yarn lots. Print out shipping label for winner. Amaze at how expensive it is to send things to Alaska. (Think about how amazing Amy's move to Alaska from DC is going to be for her and her family.)

8:30 am: Make coffee and breakfast. Start outline an article I am writing for a crochet magazine. Figure out about how many swatches I'll want to do for the article.

9:30 am: Head out for a stroll (do not say WALK in my house thank-you-very-much; unless you want an inconsolable 85-lb dog in your face.) We love our stroll, we get to bark at dogs, at cars, at trees, at lawn gnomes (oh how much fun!). Notice that my favorite tree in the park is in full bloom.

9:50 am: Taking pictures of Faye in the park when a creepy man (turns out that he's a photographer for the paper) comes up to us trying to pet Faye. She wants nothing of it. (Good girl). Ask if I want my picture with her- uh, no- I'm in my jogging clothes-no thank you. Faye scares him off, we go on.

10:30 am- Back at home, pop in my Pilates DVD. (the stroll is really more exercise for Faye then for me, so when I'm being good I end up doing something else good for me. Today it was strengthening my core. I actually laughed through the tape, it was only a few years a go I could do all the expert stuff- now I'm on the beginner level. Got to love getting older!)

11:15 am- Finish Pilates with Faye's help. (She likes to walk under my legs when I lift them up, it makes doing scissor kicks really difficult.)

12:00 pm- Shower and get dressed. Try to figure out how to do my hair. I got it cut last week, and the back is a little funky for me. Basically, I have naturally curly hair, and unless its cut really well it curves and twists all over the place. I totally didn't realize that when she cut it, and now have to straighten it when I want it to behave. Oh well, I think it looks good, so a little extra time I'll deal.

12:15 pm: Lunch with a side order of crochet murder. I'm reading "Hooked on Murder" with a group on Ravelry. (come join us!- I got mine at the library, man I love the system here.) I really enjoy book clubs and finding out how others think or interpret books. This one is really light, just a fun summer book. It makes a great lunch date.

12:30 pm- Head out to the "outside office" to start working on those article swatches. Remark to my assistant how well I match the swatch, she's enthralled.

1:30 pm- Take a break, check email. Notice email from editor about getting Final Final copy of the book tonight to review this weekend. Start formatting some catalog pages for Stitch Coop. (It's Shannon's brain child project that is brilliant. It's a collective of designers grouping together to help sell our patterns directly to yarn stores. So instead of having to contract with each of us, they can choose from all of our work. Grouping for us allows us to share the cost to show at TNNA and do advertising. We are in the preliminary stage, but soon I see really awesome things happening with them. (so yes, that means I'm moving quickly to selling my own line of patterns here.))

2pm- Head out to the library and a few other errands with Faye. (She thinks she's in heaven, she's getting a ride and a stroll today)

2:15 pm- Pick up my reserved copy of Julie's book, Uncommon Crochet. Page through it, and noticed immediately that I am going to love it. Note that I will have to do a book review of it on the blog really soon.

3 pm- Back at home in the "inside" office. Continue swatching for the article. Catch up on listening to podcasts. Shuffle between latest Fresh Air, This American Life, Getting Loopy, Yarn Craft, and Craftsanity.

4 pm- Get another email that another bidder paid. Print out postage for that yarn. Notice Mailman hasn't come yet, and leave the box for him to pick up. Got to love free carrier pickups! Check blog to see how many people have entered the giveaway. Remind myself to remind readers to enter. (Hey don't forget to enter) Head back to swatching.

4:30 pm- Get email from editor with the final final pdfs of the book. Shock! We go to print on June 6th. WOW. That's soon. Amaze how it was over a year ago that I started this journey, can't believe that it will be out in September. Cross fingers that everyone will love this book. Head back to the outside office with book to dig into editing.

5:30 pm- Get ready for date night with hubbie.

5:39 pm- What can I say, there's not much to get ready and I'm way to excited to go back through the book.

6:30 pm- Head out to dinner at this little joint by the river for dinner. Have a cross between a Sangria and a Martini - very good- have apps for our dinner. Spend a long dinner catching up on work and what not. Mr CBF is an architect and works crazy hours as well as travelling all over the US, so we love a night when we can catch up and hang out.

8:30 pm- Head to Graeters. Mmm Black Raspberry Chip Ice Cream. (As my nephew says, "um, so they just put chips in everything?" Yes, chocolate chips in nearly every flavor. There's strawberry chip, coconut chip, toffee chip, peanut butter chip, on and on. It's a tie between black raspberry and coconut for my favorite. Cinnamon and Pumpkin Spice are awesome too. What's better on a nice summer night then getting a cone and going for a stroll while eating? Nothing in my mind.

9:30 pm- Back at home. Catch up on some of our Tivo List. Laugh that we have been so busy we haven't watched tv in a week (we're tv addicts, well when we are free to be) . Turn on Top Chef, because we're dying to know who is moving on. Finish swatches for article. Continue working on my sock. Had to restart this twice. Not so sure if I'm loving the colors, but decide who cares. Its a sock, and really I use it for calisthenics for my hands any way (doing so much crocheting, I try to knit a bit so my hands don't cramp).

11 pm- Check email on last time. Create a must do list for tomorrow (my "to do" lists are always totally unrealistic- so I moved up to a must do to get myself to be more realistic with my time)

11:30 pm- Head to bed.

A day in the life of a Structural Crochet Engineer

Preface:

My sister-in-law, Julie, is the inspiration behind this post. She would write the most fantastic posts on just a typical day in her life. My sister, Courtney, and I loved them so much that we would call each other after we read them and gush about how cute our nephew was that day or how cool her city was and such. I have been percolating on this myself, and really always thought that my life was boring. But then its dawned on me, life is never boring there is always something funny or sad or thought-provoking that happens every day. So I decided to take the plunge, here is my day yesterday. Nothing earth-shattering, just a day in the life of this...

Structural Engineer- Crochet Designer- Wife- Crafter- Dog Owner- Daughter- Friend- Me

Friday, May 2, 2008:
6:00am- Turn over and look at the clock. Poke the hubbie that we agreed that today we were going to get up and start walking the puppy in the morning again now that his ankle is better.
7:30am- Actually wake up. Agreed with the hubbie that we will start tomorrow walking again, well, if it's not raining... Take Faye out, Feed Faye, Give her a hug. Check and answer my crochet account emails. I do that every morning, try to answer as many as I can in an hour before I have to get in the shower.
9:00am- Curse, forgot to get in the shower. Decide not to wash my hair, because all the fashion mags say you don't have to wash your hair every day and that will save at least 5 mins. And decide, if anyone comments on it, that's what I will tell them. Run through the shower, Throw on clothes, Hop in the car, Look longingly at Starbucks as I drive past.
9:30am- Downtown at building we are doing a facade investigation/ restoration. Take a quick photo survey of the roof. Yes, I tromp around roofs and sides of buildings pretty regularly for my job. Get some great shots of our bridges from the roof. Pinch myself at how lucky I am that I get to help restore this cool old building and how awesome the views I get to see.
10:30am- Decide to take the long way into work so I can get a stop at Starbucks.
10:35am- Mmm, Chai Tea Latte
11:30am- Downloaded pics from the morning, and start tweaking the elevations I have been working on for weeks in AutoCad. On a lot of these buildings, and architect is not involved, and we (aka me) gets to draw the building from scratch since most don't have any plans at all from when it was built. This one has one plan, yes only one plan, for the 12 story, 110 apt building. Hey, I take what I can get.
12:30pm- Make lunch. Soup (I eat soup almost every day for lunch. Summer, winter doesn't matter. I just am a soup kind of person.) Check crochet email account. Write back to a couple of people about TNNA plans. Email my editor about Blueprint Crochet, (I am a total pest and am dying to get to see the Galley Copy of the book, so I decide to bug her again. Poor thing. but I do it anyway.)
1:00pm- Back to work on the elevations. Well sort of. Have that boy-it's-Friday-and-post-lunch-coma working against me.
Every 15 mins till 4:30pm- Boss asks me a rhetorical question on the project. We work in tandem on a lot of the projects. I do most of the heavy calculations and he does a lot of the research. We share tasks of drawing plans and details, and writing notes and letters. His thinking style is to ask a million questions out loud. Granted I do that, but I do it in my head. He likes to ask them to someone, and usually answers them himself. Every 5th question, I usually give him a comment other then (yes or no) because I can't catch myself in time to remember he is just thinking out loud. This ensues a debate of the pros and cons of our ideas and the best solution. Usually takes a good 15 mins to hash it out.
2:30pm- IM hubby on what we want to do tonight. Check the weather and decide that since its going to rain, lets not go to the Pub (it has outside seating) and have a movie night inside. Debate on if we still want to grill out or get sushi.
3:20pm- Get a call from dad that he wants to pre-order Blueprint Crochet, but doesn't understand what I am talking about that he "just has to go to my blog and click the link". I giggle. He's an incredibly intelligent attorney, but the Internet and he don't always get along. Promise to walk him through it this weekend.

3:30pm- Take a break to check my google reader. I have it read hundreds of blogs a day, but I usually only get to quickly scroll through about 10 posts any given day. Boss asks me if I'm done with the elevations. I grown because I realize its 3:30 when I usually leave work (I work part-time- 6hours a day- I know its a really sweet deal), and I am not done at all. Curse the boy-it's-Friday-post-lunch-coma.
4:30pm- Finish the elevations, and chat with boss on what's left on our plate to do before our meeting with our clients on Monday. Decide to come in early on Monday to finish up the loose ends. Hubbie IM's about why am I still at work, and that he definitely wants to go out (aka don't bother stopping at g store).
5:00pm- Leave work. Call hubbie about where we want to go tonight. Realize I'm still in "Contractor Gear" (the uniform of most engineers too- khakis, polo shirt, boots) and my hair is now super greasy and you can tell its funky (decide that the fashion mags did not mean me when they say you should wash your hair every other day), so I definitely need to change and get a shower if we really are going out but have a stinky suspicion that he won't want to go out either (call it wife intuition).
5:15pm- Almost home, get a call from the hubbie that he definitely needs a night in. (He just got and earful from his boss and would rather camp out at home. - I know its like Office Space- Seagull Management at its best- "So, I'm going to have to have you work tomorrow and Sunday. Thaaaaaaaaaaaks. You are the best." Yeah I know he's the best too buddy, but working 7 days a week is getting old pal.)
5:16pm- Do a U-y. Head back to the G store. Actually am happy, because I can move right into the PJs when I get home instead of getting pretty.
5:30pm- Pick up food to grill out with and sushi. Talk to sushi chef at G store. He gives me free sushi, got to love the guy. (Yes, we have really good sushi in our g store. Cincy in general has really good sushi. Really good.)
6:00pm- Get home and let out Faye and check the mail. Play ball a bit. Rain starts again
6:20pm- Sit down to do some work on the final editing of the Mission Falls patterns.
6:30pm- Decide its Friday and work like that is just not getting done. Pour a glass of wine. Grab some old knitting magazine and hunt down some cool constructions. I do this a lot I love pouring through old magazines to find inspiration on interesting construction and schematics.
7:00pm- Decide switch it up and move to swatching instead. Grab a ball of yarn from a magazine project I am working on. Realize that I only have 10 days left to finish the design, crochet the sample sweater, and write up the pattern. Oops. Giggle how that happens every spring. (for most of my magazine work it is spread out a bit, but every spring they all seem to have the exact same deadlines- the sweater I sent out last week I crocheted in 4 days- that's super tight even for me).
7:30pm- Greet Hubbie, decide that we are going to have sushi and salad for dinner since it goes better with my wine. He chuckles at my reasoning.
8:00pm- Turn on Juno. Decide to switch to crocheting a present I am working on for my mom for mothers day. Get excited because its been years since I have crocheted from someone else's pattern. (Shh, if you can tell from the photo what it is then keep it a secret, b/c mom does read this pretty regularly and knowing me it will be next mother's day before i finish it.)
9:30pm- Crying A LOT. I cry at everything. But babies and moms get me every time. Finish the first part of the project. Start the second.
11:30pm- Half way through the second part of the project and realize I messed up the first part. Messed up by missing 10 stitches. Oops. Giggle again, that that's what happens when you crochet and drink. Sometime it's great sometimes not.
12:00am- Head to bed.

Epilogue-

So that was my day. Nothing earth shattering, just a pretty typical day. Yesterday was more engineering and less crocheting, but some days that's reversed and some days I just goof off all day.
