How do they do that?

Have you seen the crochet sweaters from Eddie Bauer?

Some are super cute, and all but one are actually crocheted. These are the two that I really like.

But my question is, how can they sell them for only 50$? You know how long that really takes to crochet. And you can't crochet by machine.
(I know the answer, it just upsets me.)

Those are nice. I especially like the top photo in your blog.

Having worked in merchandising for EB, I can tell you that they have a director whose sole purpose is to travel to the factories and make sure that they are living up to EB's high standards for factory wages, practices and treatment. They were tested based on facility cleanliness, employee age, wage, hours worked, and making sure employees were given regular break. If a factory failed our test I wasn't allowed to purchase from them anymore. It hurt my bottom line more than once. There were some countries we couldn't go near because they wouldn't agree to the standards. I can't say that they earned anything near what a US worker made, but they received fair compensation relative to their economic region or they didn't work for EB. I can't speak for them over the last 5 years, but I think they were proud of their policy and wanted to make a difference.

I know the answer too and an economist made me think that it was okay (for about five minutes). Now it just upsets me again...

I like the designs though! ;)

See I always think the same thing. All that work with a low price tag. That's why when I buy something handmade, and the price tag is high I get it...

I do stained glass, and find the same problem. All of the manufactured stuff is ruining it for artists.
